We can’t imagine what will happen after the election. We can’t dream of what will follow the pandemic. All the old optimism, the hope for a good future, is gone. The reason: When Trump and the virus are history, we will still be continuing our mindless civil war. All these years the happy hate has distorted our lives, until it blends seamlessly into our language. We think its normal. But hate never stops working. It rewards its victims with a kind of pleasure, then treats its hosts to a very special blindness, in which prosperity & freedom is mistaken for the enormous undertaking of mass suicide. For how long have we been killing the life that gives us life? The impossible healing must start now. ----
